The Core Issue: The Cache
When you scroll through your feed or watch Reels, Instagram wants the experience to be smooth and fast. To achieve this, it saves (caches) the images and videos you look at onto your iPhone's local storage.
This means that if you scroll back up, the video does not need to download a second time. The more you use the app, the more data it caches. Over weeks and months, this cached data accumulates into gigabytes of hidden storage.
Drafts and Saved Content
Beyond the automatic cache, your active usage also takes up space:
- Reel and Story Drafts: If you edit a Reel and save it as a draft to post later, the heavy video files are saved locally on your phone within the Instagram app.
- Original Photos: By default, Instagram might save an original copy of every photo you take or edit within the app directly to your camera roll, doubling the storage used.
How to Clear Instagram Storage on iPhone
Unlike Android, Apple's iOS does not have a simple "Clear Cache" button in the Settings app for Instagram. You have to take a slightly different approach.
Method 1: Delete and Reinstall the App (Best Method)
The only reliable way to clear the gigabytes of cached images and videos is to delete the app entirely.
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find and tap Instagram.
- Tap Delete App (Do NOT tap "Offload App" — offloading keeps the cache).
- Go to the App Store and download Instagram again.
Will I lose my photos? No. Your profile, posted photos, and messages are stored on Instagram's servers, not your phone. However, you will lose any unpublished Drafts, so publish them before you delete the app.
Method 2: Stop Saving Originals
To stop Instagram from secretly filling up your phone's camera roll in the future:
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap the three lines in the top right corner and select Settings and activity.
- Scroll down to Archiving and downloading.
