If you spend an hour a day scrolling through your For You page, you might be surprised to learn that TikTok is quietly hoarding gigabytes of data on your iPhone. The app itself is not very large, but the files it collects while you watch videos can quickly fill up your storage.
Why Does TikTok Storage Grow?
TikTok is designed to be seamless. When you swipe up to the next video, it plays instantly without buffering. To achieve this magic, the app constantly downloads and saves videos to your phone's memory just before you watch them. This is called the Cache.
In addition to the cache, if you are a creator (even a casual one), any videos you record but do not publish immediately are saved as Drafts. Since these are high-quality video files stored locally on your device, a dozen drafts can easily take up several gigabytes.
Finally, your browsing history, saved filters, and offline downloads (if you use that feature) all contribute to the app's massive footprint.
How to Clear TikTok Storage
Fortunately, unlike many other apps, TikTok actually provides built-in tools to manage its storage without forcing you to delete the app completely.
Step 1: Clear the Cache
This is the safest and easiest way to free up space. It will not delete your drafts, your profile, or your liked videos.
- Open TikTok and go to your profile.
- Tap the three lines (hamburger menu) in the top right corner and select Settings and privacy.
- Scroll down to the "Cache & Cellular" section and tap Free up space.
- Tap the Clear button next to "Cache".
You can also clear your "Downloads" from this same menu if you have saved videos for offline viewing.
Step 2: Manage Your Drafts
If clearing the cache only freed up a few hundred megabytes, your problem is likely your Drafts.
Warning: Drafts are stored locally on your phone. If you delete them, or if you delete the TikTok app from your iPhone, your drafts will be permanently gone. They are not backed up to your TikTok account.
- Go to your TikTok profile.
- Tap the Drafts folder (it is the first square on your video grid).
- Review the videos you have saved.
- Tap Select in the top right, choose the drafts you no longer need to publish, and tap Delete.
What About Your Camera Roll?
If you often use the "Save Video" feature on TikTok to send funny clips to your friends via text, those videos are saved directly to your iPhone's Photos app. Because they are video files, they take up a massive amount of space.
